Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F or 45°C)
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

For the Sauce:

  • 1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Fresh basil leaves (optional)

Toppings (Customizable):

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Pepperoni slices
  • Sliced bell peppers
  • Sliced mushrooms
  • Onions, olives, spinach, etc.

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add olive oil, salt, and 3 1/2 cups of flour. Stir to combine, then knead by hand (or with a stand mixer and dough hook) until smooth and elastic, about 8–10 minutes. Add more flour if too sticky.
  3. Form the dough into a ball, coat with olive oil, and place in a large bowl. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rise for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 2: Prepare the Sauce

  1. Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant (about 30 seconds).
  2. Add crushed tomatoes, oregano, and salt. Simmer for 15–20 minutes. Add basil leaves at the end, if using.

Step 3: Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven while it heats.

Step 4: Shape the Dough

  1. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 2 equal parts (for 2 pizzas).
  2. On a floured surface, roll each dough ball into a 12-inch circle.
  3. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet or a pizza peel if using a stone.

Step 5: Assemble the Pizza

  1. Spread a layer of sauce on the dough.
  2. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese evenly.
  3. Add your favorite toppings.

Step 6: Bake

  1. Transfer the pizza to the oven. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling.
  2. Remove from oven, let cool slightly, slice, and enjoy!
